SAA Signs Onto A2K Coalition Call for SCCR to Remove Broadcasting Treaty from Agenda, Create Priority Working Groups

October 6, 2023—SAA has joined the Access to Knowledge Coalition (A2K), which represents educators, researchers, students, libraries, archives, museums, other knowledge users, and creative communities around the globe, to urge the 44th session of WIPO's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) to evaluate certain agenda items for their upcoming session in November 2023. The letter specifically identifies agenda items 5, 6, 7, and 8 as areas where further scrutiny and revision are required. The Broadcasting Treaty in agenda item 5 in particular raises concerns for access to knowledge. As the letter states, "We believe that the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) has a unique role in responding to the need for clear guidance and robust exceptions and limitations to support education, research and access to culture, particularly in a cross-border and online environment."
