Guidelines for Reappraisal and Deaccessioning

The Guidelines for Reappraisal and Deaccessioning is undergoing its first review since the SAA Council approved the Guidelines in 2012. The Technical Subcommittee on Reappraisal and Deaccessioning is soliciting feedback.

To begin thinking about reviewing the Guidelines, the technical subcommittee asks you to consider the following:

  • How have you used the Guidelines?
  • What have you found helpful?
  • What have you done differently or what might you do differently than the procedures described in the Guidelines?
  • Are there any issues with reappraisal or deaccessioning not covered in the Guidelines?

Any and all feedback is welcome. There are two ways to submit comments:

  1. Email them to Laura Uglean Jackson, TS-GRD chair at lugleanj@uci.edu
  2. Submit them directly to this Google Doc

Excerpt from Introduction: "Since the 1980s, the archival profession has more readily come to acknowledge reappraisal and deaccessioning as parts of good collections management practices.  This is evinced in numerous case studies, institutional policies, conference sessions, and articles about reappraisal and deaccessioning.  Despite the increasing amount of research and information on these practices, they remain controversial and not fully accepted by the profession.  Archival practitioners need a clear process outlining general steps, problems, and solutions to responsible and ethical reappraisal and deaccessioning."
