SAA Career Center Call for Advisors and Interviewers

The Career Center Needs Your Help!

The Career Center is excited to again provide attendees at the Joint Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, with the opportunity to hone their career development skills and volunteer with SAA. We are offering attendees two forms of career services: advising sessions to speak with other professionals or mock interviews to get ready for that next big job opportunity! In order to provide career services to attendees, we are seeking volunteers to serve as Advisors and Mock Interviewers. This is your chance to be a career coach!

During this year's Joint Annual Meeting, the Career Center is open as follows:

  • Wednesday, August 15: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

  • Thursday, August 16: 8:00 am – 10:00 am; 10:30 am - 4:30 pm

  • Friday, August 17: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

The 2018 career center will offer:

  • Handouts on resume building and cover letters
  • Resume review by appointment
  • General career consulting by experienced CoSA, NAGARA, and SAA members
  • Posted job announcements
  • A place to post your resume
  • Mock interviews

Career Advisors

Joint Annual Meeting attendees may schedule an appointment in advance for consultation with a career advisor. Career advising offers an opportunity for new professionals to gain advice from more experienced members. In addition, members seeking to make career changes often seek advising support.

Topics for the in-person career advising session are left up to the advisor and advisee, but we recommend communicating in advance of your in-person meeting about subjects to cover in order to get the most out of your time together.

Mock Interviewers

Conference attendees may also sign up for mock interviews. We are seeking interviewers who have hiring experience, or would like more interviewing experience, and would be comfortable engaging in mock interviews.

In advance of the in-person meeting, you should plan to correspond with the member seeking services. We will ask the Interviewee to introduce themselves to you and provide the job posting they want to 'interview' for, along with their resume and cover letter. From that point on, it will be up to both people to correspond in preparation for the mock interview as if this were a real job prospect.

The mock interview time should focus on asking interview-style questions, followed by the mentor providing the interviewee with feedback regarding the entire process, including professionalism, resume, cover letter, and any other topics that might help the interviewer.

Interested?

Once we have a list of volunteers for interviewers/advisors, we will make a match with those seeking interviewing or advising services. We will contact both of you to arrange a time and day to meet at the Career Center.

The deadline to sign up as either a mock interviewer or an advisor is July 25. If you are interested, please fill out this Google Form. This form will be used to collect information that we need to match you with interviewees/advisees - including your name and dates/times you are available to volunteer. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Motszko at j_motszk@uncg.edu.

Thank you, and I hope many of you will consider supporting our profession by volunteering with the Career Center this year at the Joint Annual Meeting in Washington, DC!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Motszko
