Attendees of ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2016 will have a fun opportunity to give back to the host city by participating in a charitable service project. We will be partnering with Furkids (http://furkids.org/) to provide volunteer opportunities for interested meeting goers.
What is Furkids?
Furkids is a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats and a no-kill division for dogs. At these locations, animals experience the best care in a loving, safe environment until they are adopted into forever homes.
The Furkids mission is to help end pet overpopulation in Georgia through sterilization, high-quality adoption and by providing valuable spay/neuter services and pet care education to people in the community.
Furkids cares for more animals on a daily basis than any other local organization and has rescued and altered more than 15,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 1,000 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, 14 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers and more than 400 foster homes.
What will the volunteers do?

Service Project II – Furkids Donations
When: Tuesday, August 2 – Saturday August 6
Where: Donation Boxes in the Hilton Atlanta, Level 2
To help out kids of the four-legged variety… SAA will be collecting wish list items for Furkids. The shelter's needs range from items for the animals to office supplies, many of which are "suitcase friendly."
For SAA's novice and champion knitters, cat and dog blankets would be welcome as well! We'll be sharing more about ways to help Atlanta's pets-in-waiting as the meeting gets closer. In the meantime, check out Furkids' wish list. https://furkids.org/donation/wish-list
Vote for your favorite archival animal! This summer, Kate Theimer will be hosting a web contest encouraging archivists to "vote" for their favorite archival photos featuring animals. In order to participate, voters will donate money or wish-list items to the Furkids shelter. The selection will be narrowed down based on your votes each week …with the ultimate winner being selected during the 2016 conference! More information will be available as the conference gets closer!
