2020 GRS Election: Candidate Statements and Bios

Thank you to all of our excellent candidates for standing in the 2020 Government Records Section election. Please take some time to review their candidate statements and get to know them so you can make an informed choice.

You will be voting for 3 steering committee members. Ballots will be managed by SAA staff; keep an eye on your inbox for when the ballot opens!

The following candidates are running for the section steering committee:

Cathrine Giles

State Records Branch Manager, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives

Government Sector: State

Biography: I have worked in government records management since 2016 when I joined the State Records Branch in the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. I work with state agencies on their records management, from scheduling to final disposition.

Candidate Statement: In my experience so far, government records can often be misunderstood in their accessibility, their length of retention, and their significance to and use by those outside of the creating agency, among other things. Serving on the GRS Steering Committee is a great opportunity to facilitate and continue discussions about the concerns we face, create and bring attention to resources available to its members, and contribute to the Society of American Archivists. I would be honored to be considered.

Gina Nichols

Supervisory Archivist/Head of Collections, U.S. Navy Seabee Museum

Government Sector: Federal

Biography: Gina Nichols has been Supervisory Archivist and Head of Collections for the U.S. Navy Seabee Museum in Port Hueneme, CA since April 2016. Prior to this she served as the museum’s archivist from 2004 to 2016. From 2009 – 2014 she taught archival management courses for the Department of History at California State University Northridge. She has a M.A. and B.A. in History from California State University Northridge and a Master’s in Library and Information Science at San Jose State University. Nichols is also a Certified Archivist and a NARA Certified Federal Records Manager. She is an alumnus of the Archives Leadership Institute (2014) and the Greater Los Angeles Federal Executive Board Leadership Associates Program (2007).

Candidate Statement: I am interested in continuing to work as an active member of the Government Records Section steering committee and help to determine the direction GRS will move in over the next several years. I believe my professional experience will help in planning new programs and initiatives for our members. My goal is to assist the GRS as they respond to SAA Council requests for information and advice and support with any project they decide to undertake.

Genevieve Preston

Archivist, San Bernardino County Historical Archives

Government Sector: Local

Biography: I am the Archivist for the County of San Bernardino. In my position, I am responsible for managing all aspects of the County Archive from reference services to outreach and access. I have a MA in the History of Art from the University of California at Riverside.

Candidate Statement: I believe the role of steering committee member is to encourage open communication with members, by using both email and social media to connect. Communication is essential and can help connect members who each have their own unique set of challenges. The steering committee is the guiding force and should provide opportunities for its members to connect and learn from each other. I have worked with government records for over 15 years, and every day I still learn something new.
