used for reference

Broader Term:

n. ~ A cross-reference under a preferred heading from nonpreferred headings; a direction from a nonpreferred heading.

Used for references are part of the syndetic structure used in a thesaurus, especially one constructed using the ANSI Z39.19 standard, Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri. They provide links from headings with similar meanings to the one heading to be used for indexing and cataloging. They are reciprocal to use references. For example, in the Library of Congress Subject Headings the heading African Americans lists a used for reference from the now obsolete subject heading Afro-Americans.
