Use references are part of the syndetic structure used in a thesaurus, especially one constructed using the ANSI Z39.19 standard, Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri. They provide links from headings with similar meanings to the one heading to be used for indexing and cataloging. They are reciprocal to used for references. For example, in the Library of Congress Subject Headings the now obsolete subject heading Afro-Americans has a use reference to African Americans.
