upward reference

Broader Term:

n. ~ A cross-reference from a specific concept to a more general concept; a direction to a broader term.

Upward references are part of the syndetic structure used in a thesaurus. Upward references are reciprocal to downward references. For example, separate entries for beds, chairs, and chests may include upward references to furniture. The entry for furniture would include each of those terms as a downward reference.
