telegram

n. A text message that is transmitted using a sequence of electrical pulses and then recorded on paper.

Notes

Telegraphy describes systems invented in the mid-19th century, especially a system that uses a series of pulses to represent letters, such as Morse code. The message may be handwritten by a telegraph operator listening to a message as a series of long and short tones. Later development recorded the message mechanically. Originally transmitted over wires, telegrams were later sent over the radio.
