n. ~ 1. An extension of the principal title (the title proper), usually distinguished from the principal title by design or a different typeface. - 2. Moving images, Theater · Dialog that is displayed as text, usually at the bottom of the frame or above or below the stage.

Notes: 

In cataloging, a subtitle1 is called other title information. - Subtitles2 are commonly used in foreign language films and operas to supply a translation of the dialog. In silent films, inner titles displayed full-screen between shots are sometimes called subtitles.
