subheading

n. DescriptionA word or phrase added to a heading to further distinguish categories under the heading. A word or phrase added to a heading used to distinguish the heading from similar headings.

Notes

A subheading1 is usually separated from the heading with a mark of punctuation. A dash is often used to separate subheadings for different classes within a heading. For example, 'Arizona - Pictorial works'. - Various schemes may be used for subheadings2 used to distinguish one heading for another. For example, birth and death dates added to a personal name are distinguished using a comma, while fuller forms of a name are in parentheses. For example, Miller, Mrs. J. (Anna), b. 1825 is distinguished from Miller, Mrs. J. (Wanda), b. 1954.
