Glossary search

n. ~ 1. A measure of an information system's ability to retrieve items relevant to a search, typically measured as a ratio of relevant items retrieved to all relevant items in the database.

- v. ~ 2. Libraries · To request a patron to return a book, especially for use by another patron.

It is possible to recall1 all relevant items in a database (a 100% recall ratio), but the precision of the search is likely to be low. If a database contains 100 items, and 25 are relevant to a search, a search that returns all items has 100% recall but only 25% precision.
