(also mat), n. ~ 1. A dull, nonreflecting finish, principally used to describe the surface of photographic prints. - 2. Motion pictures · A mask used to block a portion of the film during shooting, allowing another scene to be printed in composite to create a final image.

Notes: 

The use of a matte2 for special effects was a very common before the introduction of computer generated imagery (CGI).
