n. ~ The study of the theory and practice of creating, acquiring, processing, managing, retrieving, and disseminating information, especially the use of computers to facilitate these processes.

(Dictionary of Computing 1996, p. 241) The term was coined in the aftermath of the spread of computers and the corresponding revolution in information-handling techniques. Information science therefore inevitably pays substantial attention to, but is not confined to, what can be achieved with computers.
