downward reference

Broader Term:

n. ~ A cross-reference from a general to a more specific topic; a direction to a narrower term.

Downward references are part of the syndetic structure used in a thesaurus. Downward references are reciprocal to upward references. For example, an entry for furniture may include downward references to bed, chair, and chest. Entries for each of those terms would include furniture as upward references.
