digital photograph

n. An image produced using a digital camera and stored as an electronic file. An image originally produced using a digital camera and rendered for viewing as a virtual image or on film or paper; also called digital print.

Notes

Traditionally photographs have been defined as an image made using light to trigger a chemical reaction that forms the image. Digital photographs blur that definition because the original camera image is made by a photoelectric effect and prints made using most computer printers (ink jet, laser printers) are mechanical rather than photochemical. The use of 'photograph', rather than 'print', to describe these images results from the use of a camera and their mechanical fidelity of detail to the original.
