cylinder

n. ~ 1. A regular shape with a circular base and with sides at right angles to the base. - 2. Audio · A sound recording format. - 3. Computing · In a multiplatter hard drive, the set of tracks on all platters sharing the same distance from the hub.

Notes: 

The cylinder2 format was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877-1878. It could hold between two and four minutes of sound. In addition to its use for commercial entertainment, the Dictaphone Company used the format in early machines for dictation and transcription.
