continuity

n.Audiovisual RecordsThe process of ensuring that details in different takes match in the context of the program.

Notes

Continuity ensures that time within a program is perceived as realistic, not the actual time required to make the program. For example, some scenes may be shot several times or be shot in an order different from that in the program. Continuity records details necessary to give a sense of a seamless flow. For example, if a scene filmed over a day takes only a few minutes, a clock visible in the scene must appear to represent narrative time, not actual time.
