character set

n. ~ The letters, symbols, numbers, and special codes allowed within an environment, which may be constrained by hardware, software, or an established standard.

Notes: 

Two prominent key character sets include ASCII and EBCDIC. Seven-bit ASCII has a number of extended, eight-bit character sets; the first 128 characters are the same in all sets, but the second half of the set contains characters appropriate to different languages.
