cellulose nitrate

(also nitrate, nitrocellulose), n. ~ An extruded plastic made from cellulose, usually from wood pulp or cotton, mixed with nitric and sulfuric acids.


Cellulose nitrate was commonly used as the base of photographic and motion picture film from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. It is highly flammable and in advance stages of deterioration can combust spontaneously.
