Participants in MayDay 2017
Please tell us how you plan to spread the word or participate at some level in MayDay 2017 activities by posting a note below or sending an email to mayday@archivists.org. Thanks for helping to save our archives!
- Bethany College T.W. Phillips Memorial Library: Reference, Instruction and Archives Librarian Sharon Monigold took action on MayDay by creating a comprehensive emergency contacts list for the library and archives. The department plans to have the list posted at the library and to send a copy home with all staff.
- Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation: Continuing in the tradition established by SAA and Heritage Preservation, FAIC encourages libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and preservation organizations to set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay. The FAIC has been posting preparedness tips all month on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #MayDayPrep, and on Monday, May 1, will be hosting a Facebook Live session at 2:00 pm EST on "Working with Disaster Recovery Companies." They are also collecting stories on everyone's MayDay activities here - everyone who shares their activities by May 31 will be entered to win prizes from Gaylord Archival! To learn more about the FAIC's MayDay plans, visit their website.
- Pennsylvania State Archives: On May 1 and 2, the Pennsylvania State Archives will host a Disaster Response and Assessment training for targeted state employees and existing PA Cultural Resilience Team members, with the goal that trainees could be dispatched to a disaster scenario and confidently conduct an assessment, make recommendations for further action and do preliminary hands-on triage. The training is made possible through a collaboration with the State Library of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office and the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts and is funded-in-part by a National Historical Publications and Records Commission State Board Programming Grant.
- SAA Preservation Section: Archivists and preservation specialists will take to Twitter today to answer your questions as part of Preservation Week 2017. This special preservation-focused edition of #AskAnArchivist Day, sponsored by SAA’s Preservation Section, will give you a chance to ask questions about how to care for your collections, get information on what to do with your family heirlooms, or just satisfy your curiosity about what those folks in the preservation department are doing. Take part by tweeting a question and including the hashtag #AskAnArchivist, or follow along at #AskAnArchivist as questions and answers are shared.
