Mission Statement

To serve as a forum to educate archivists on the complexities and beauty of Native American archives of the Western Hemisphere and as a source of communication and inspiration for archivists working with Native American collections.

Section History David George-Shongo (Seneca), first NAAR Chair, 2005-2007

The Section (formerly Roundtable) was formed as a result of a petition at the 2005 SAA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. On August 13, 2005, SAA Council approved the Roundtable by a unanimous vote. For more information see the article, "Strengthening Tribal Archives," by Briana Bob, in the September/October 2005 Archival Outlook (page 21). David L. George-Shongo, Jr. (see photo) was elected the first NAAR Chair in 2005.

NAAS section leaders are currently seeking submissions for our case studies series on how archivists, librarians, and other cultural heritage professionals are using the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials to manage and evolve access policies to Native American materials within their own repositories.
