Notes

Research on recording television programs on tape began in 1951 but was not practical for use in broadcasting until the mid-1950s. Common broadcast formats include 2-inch open reels, 1-inch open reel, ¾-inch U-matic cassettes, and ½-inch cassettes. Consumer formats include ½-inch Betamax and VHS cassettes, and Hi-8 cassettes.
