vertical cut recording

n.A technique of recording sound on an analog disc by cutting the signal into the bottom of the groove, causing the pickup stylus to move up and down.

Notes

Edison's Diamond Disc and Pathé discs use this technique. Because of the up-and-down movement of the stylus, it is sometimes called hill and dale.
