generation loss

n.A degradation of quality resulting from imperfect reproduction techniques.

Notes

Generation loss may include the introduction of noise and a loss of acuity. The quality of successive generations1 generally deteriorates when using an analog process. Although digital reproduction is, in theory, capable of producing successive generations without loss of quality, in practice the copying process may introduce errors.
