freeze drying

(also lyophilization), n.A treatment to dry water-soaked materials by freezing the materials and placing them in a vacuum to remove the ice through sublimation.

Notes

Techniques vary by the use of heat and the degree of vacuum. Freeze drying often connotes a hard vacuum and the use of heat. Vacuum drying connotes a lower vacuum and no heat.
