filing feature

n. An element of an item that may be used to classify the item within a filing system.

Notes

Classification for a series may be based on the filing feature most commonly used to request items belonging to that series. For example, filing features commonly found on correspondence include the name of the correspondent, the name of the addressee, a date, and a subject. Depending on the office, the series may be organized by any one of these filing features. Accounting records may be organized under a filing feature such as a purchase order number or account number.
