encapsulation

n. Preservation and ConservationThe process of placing a document between two sheets of plastic (usually polyester), which are sealed at the edges, in order to provide support and to protect it from handling and from the atmosphere. ComputingThe combination of several digital objects into a single unit that preserves the association of those objects.

Notes

Encapsulation1 does nothing to protect against the continued chemical deterioration of the document within the enclosure, and the creation of a microclimate may accelerate its deterioration. However, the technique provides significant support and protection for fragile documents. Unlike heat lamination, the document is not permanently fixed to the enclosure and can be easily removed.Encapsulation2 may be used, for example, to combine an electronic record, metadata, and a viewer to render the record.
